Task

You have been studying about slavery in your Social Studies class. You will learn more about slavery and the life of slaves in the United Stated during the years 1700-1860. In addition, you’ll analyze slave life and your life based on our democratic ideals of today. You will write an essay, create a PowerPoint presentation and an at-home project to demonstrate your learning. The presentation will be orally presented to your class and provide a clear and detailed response to the following essential question:

Essential Question:

What can we learn from slavery in America’s past that is important for us to remember today?

Guiding questions:

  1. What do I believe are the two most important slavery-related events that occurred in the United States during the years 1700-1860?

  1. How does the historical period (1700-1860) affect the experiences of slaves in America?

  1. Analyze how the Constitution today relates to the rights and responsibilities of slaves during the years 1700-1860.

Scenario:

You travel back in time. You are the slave you studied. Last night you received a visit from someone living in the year 2008. They educated you about life and our democratic ideals in the year 2008. You will compare and contrast your lives.

As the slave, knowing what you know now, what might be different about your life in the future based on current basic freedoms (not material and/or physical possessions) that will improve the quality of life in 2008? Write a 3 paragraph essay from the slave point of view.
